April 1 - 1er avril Jokes, tall stories and all kinds of tomfoolery... April 1st is here! April Fools Day is an ancient tradition, named “le poisson davril” in French. But poisson means fish in French doesnt it? What are the origins of this name? Passion = poisson: the word “poisson” is in fact a play on the word “passion”. It is a parody of the passion of Jesus Christ, who at the beginning of April was sent back and forth between Pontious Pilate, King Herod and others before the crucifixion. Over the centuries the word passion became poisson; the joke consisted of sending someone from one place to another. Fishing: fish spawning season begins at the end of March and fishing was not allowed at this time: there were some practical jokers who sent victims to the fish market, only for them to come back empty-handed! It was also considered funny to give someone a fish at the end of Lent. The start of the year: until the 16th century, the start of the year was actually on 1 April, corresponding with the “awakening of nature” during spring. King Charles IX of France decided that the year would begin on 1 January. Many people didnt realise or pay attention, and they continued to celebrate the New Year on 1 April! To make fun of these people, others gave them empty boxes and other fake gifts on 1 April. Blagues, plaisanteries, galéjades,... Le 1er avril est la journée des farces ! Le poisson du 1er avril est une tradition ancestrale ! Son origine est imprécise. Il existe diverses tentatives d’explications comme : Passion et poisson: le mot poisson serait en fait « passion » qui renvoie à une parodie de la passion de Jésus Christ qui, début avril, fut baladé dAnne à Caïphe, de Caïphe à Pilate, de Pilate à Hérode, et dHérode à Pilate. Au fil tu temps, le mot passion serait devenu poisson; la plaisanterie consisterait à envoyer une personne d’un endroit à l’autre ; La pèche : la frai des poissons commencent fin mars et la pêche est interdite à cette époque ; ils y avaient des petits malins pour envoyer des « victimes » aux marchés aux poissons qui revenaient bredouille ! Toujours en rapport avec la pêche, certains affirment qu’on offrait sous forme de plaisanterie un poisson à la fin du carême ; Le début de l’année : jusqu’au 16ème siècle, le début de l’année commencerait le 1er avril ce qui en soi correspondait au réveil de la nature. Le roi de France Charles IX décida, par l’Édit de Roussillon, que l’année débuterait désormais le 1er janvier. Beaucoup de distraits continuaient à fêter la nouvelle année le 1er avril ! Pour se moquer d’eux, des faux cadeaux leur étaient remis à la date de l’ancienne nouvelle année soit le 1er avril ; D’autres récits se rapportent à cette coutume comme celui du Prince de Lorraine qui s’évada à la barbe de Louis XIII un 1er avril ou ceux qui s’inspirent de l’astrologie.
