Are You a Bumpaholic? Comments Not exactly in Merriam Webster’s yet, the term “bumpaholics” is the new word for moms who have the insatiable desire to continue having children. Women’s Health magazine Editor in Chief Michelle Promaulayko was featured on Good Morning America the other day to break down the phenomenon. While the word is new, moms have traditionally been bumpaholics often raising multiple children. However producing numerous children seems to be a recent hot topic and a sign of the times. But what exactly are the reasons that moms crave the bump? According to anthropologists and psychologists, aside from natural cultural cues that promote large families in the United States, being pregnant rewards mothers both physiologically and psychologically. Natural hormones like oxytosin and estrogen also play a role rewarding pregnant women with positive feelings and emotions. But how many is enough? Despite it being perfectly healthy and normal to have multiple children, it is important to do so for the right reasons. It becomes concerning when the drive to become preganncy supersedes all other aspects of one’s life. While some desire to have more children to avoid postpartum depression or to even justify and not worry about their weight gain, others become pregnant irrationally believing it will solve all of their problems. And in even some situations, women get pregnant because of the all the attention and assistance they receive from their spouses, families and friends. Like removing one’s self from any dependency, withdral from having a child can be difficult. Ultimately though, having a child is a family decision and one that should not be taken lightly. It is important that the entire family is prepared both emotionally and financially to add another member to the clan. Are you or anyone you know a bumpaholic?
