Are you on our mailing list? If not, you can sign up on our website: severnriverkeeper.org Here the latest email we sent: You may remember that we sued MDE for denying our friends in the Pines Community a permit to replace a failing bulkhead with a living shoreline. The living shoreline will add wetlands to the Severn River, which is a stated goal of the OMalley Administration. MDE denied the permit anyway. The judge was so offended by MDEs arbitrary and capricious action that she agreed with us that the permit should be issued within 45 days. MDE issued the permit. Since filing the lawsuit, MDE has opposed our restoration projects, for which they had previously given us awards. They also appear to be targeting our contractors for petty enforcement action, which will waste taxpayers dollars. We had to return $920,000 in grants for our stream restoration project. That money will now have to come out of county taxpayers pockets. Again, unnecessary costs to the taxpayer. The good news is that both candidates for County Executive understand that MDE is truly the last obstacle to restoring our county waterways. At last nights forum. they both promised action against MDE. I hope that the new Governor will also understand the obstacle that MDE presents to Bay Restoration and will make the necessary changes. We need to protect our waterways for our children and future generations. Thanks to Steve and Barbara Petersen, John and Patricia Hunt, Henry and Ellen Lucas, Anne Herndon, Mari Horak, James Brady and Margery Silverton for their generous donations toward a new riverkeeper boat. The new riverkeeper boat will be taking kids monitoring, so that they can appreciate the wonderful gift that is the Severn. If you wish to help pay for the new riverkeeper boat, just mail a check payable to the Severn Riverkeeper Program to Fred Kelly, 329 Riverview Trail, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. Any and all donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated. See you on the river when we get the new boat!
