Castro was being held at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, serving a life in prison sentence for kidnapping and raping Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight and holding them hostage for a decade. According to Joellen Smith, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Castro was found hanging in his cell at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday. Castro had been in protective custody and in the cell by himself, according to Smith. After finding Castro, prison medical staff began performing life-saving measures. He was taken to Ohio State University Medical Center and pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m. A review of the incident is underway. This is a developing story.
