Around 2020 computers will achieve the ability to calculate as much information as a human. Around 2029 theyll achieve self-awareness. By that time theyll have surpassed us in intelligence. I believe based on whats put into computers, they will also have a self-protection mode, especially in battle field robots that 56 countries are already working on. I believe there should be protocols in place to safeguard human beings, as computers once networked will be far more powerful that people, controlling everything from traffic lights, cell phones, missile systems to power plants. Eventually there will be a movement to grant a state of equality to some computers/androids/robots with all the rights and privileges of human being, including marriage. I give that about a hundred years or less. And there probably wont be a choice in the matter because we wont be able to just pull the plug - were already too integrated as a species and our robot companions - overlords might not like things if theyre given an emotional side.
