Arsenal Debate – What is an acceptable target for next season? What would be a good season for Arsenal? For the first time in a while, we are experiencing a summer transfer window without the usual panic and trepidation over which of our stars we might lose before the start of the new season. We have the opportunity to build on last year’s squad and performances, and by all accounts we actually have some money to spend. It’s an unfamiliar position, but quite a nice one to be in for a change. However, as much as we have the opportunity to improve, Chelsea are buying highly rated prospects with alarming ease; Man City are on their way to spending another £100+ million, and Man United won the league at a canter last season. Things aren’t going to get much easier. On the positive side, we have an excellent squad that is capable of beating anyone on their day. It’s a backhanded compliment – Everton can beat anyone on their day. We must be better than that – we must become a team that can beat anyone on an off day. To do that, we need a couple of signings, and the capture of Higuain would be one such signing. Underappreciated in Spain, Higuain has an incredible goal-scoring record, and he has the kind of class to become an Arsenal legend. What I’m interested to hear, however, is what would you class as a good season for Arsenal in 2013-14? Let’s say we sign Higuain, keep Sagna and bring in a young but promising central midfielder (picking a name out of my arse – Schneiderlin from Southampton). How do we judge progress – is it solely on trophies? A title challenge that falters in April, resulting in a 2nd place finish in the league would represent a big improvement on recent years. Would that be enough to appease fans if it meant early exits from the FA Cup and Champions League? What about another 4th place finish – a Champion’s League quarter final and an FA Cup victory? Would any silverware be enough? We speak often about returning to our winning ways, but to jump straight to the top in a single season is almost unthinkable. First and foremost, we must progress and improve on last year – but what level of progress would you deem acceptable?
