Arthritis: Know the Early Warning Signs The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. This degenerative joint disease only affects joint function. It impacts the cartilage that surrounds and cushions your joints. Being aware of the normal function of your joints and when something is different and outside of the norm is important. Joint pain is one of the most noticeable first signs of arthritis. Pain can range from mild to severe. When joint pain becomes so severe as to impact the activities of daily living it is time to see the doctor. Additionally, experiencing bouts of joint stiffness can be a sign that osteoarthritis is the culprit. Joint stiffness is often most noticeable in the morning upon waking, and will usually dissipate within 30 minutes. Another sign of osteoarthritis can include crunching sounds when you walk or bend. This happens due to the deteriorating cartilage, and the result is that there is no protective cushioning between bones. Lastly, you may experience swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected joints. This is a result of inflammation in the joint. Being aware of the signs of osteoarthritis is important in order to avoid long term complications that can result if you do not seek treatment. -Amy Sharify, PharmD Candidate Class of 2014 Sources: arthritis.org/index/arthritis-action-month/aam-warning-signs/ livestrong/article/117798-symptoms-osteoarthritis-whole-body/
