Article: United Friends of Homeless Animals - Shelter Tales Good news at the shelter. Nolan, our yellow lab mix was adopted by a woman who wanted the perfect playmate for her dog. It is impossible not to love Nolan because he is so friendly and affectionate, and we were not surprised that she thought so too. We will miss his smiling face and sweet disposition, but are so happy that he now has his own family. A very kind woman named Linda, from Mexico, rescues strays and she recently found a feral mother cat with four kittens living in an abandoned wood chuck hole. She trapped the mother and the Oswego County Humane Society spayed her and released her to an apple farmer near Mexico who has a kind heart and room in his barn. Over the next several days she trapped the four kittens and brought them all to us. They have tested negativ e for feline leukemia, have been vaccinated and will be spayed/neutered when they are old enough. They are some of the most beautiful kittens I have ever seen. There are three long haired, nearly all white females with some orange and black markings. Their names are Maple, Poppy and Briar Rose. Their brother, S’mores, is nearly all white with a gray face and perfectly symmetrical black markings on his cheeks and forehead. They are truly gorgeous cats. They are a little bit shy, but getting better by the day. The world needs all the Lindas it can get! These cats would likely not have survived long if she hadn’t been persistent in trying to rescue them. We also have three other new kittens in residence. Sizzle, a little gray striped tiger came in with his brother, Marley, who is being fostered by Gaile, one of our volunteers. Noble is a small, black male with muted gray stripes, and Pippen his brother, who is very small and all black, were dropped off at a farm whose owner already cares for nearly two dozen others who have been dropped off over the years. She is at the saturation point, so we were glad to help out. All of these guys were tested for leukemia and vaccinated and will be ready for adoption when they are old enough to be neutered. Adorable kittens… I am contemplating adding to my already large animal menagerie. I have five cats and really do know that I can’t have any more, but when I go to the shelter I usually am tempted to ignore that. Kate and all of the volunteers know that and have been instructed to check Donna’s pockets when she leaves. No more cats! This time, however, it is another Rottweiler mix who desperately needs a home. Shannon and I drove to Oswego Sunday to pick her up and were shocked at how bad of shape she was in. She was emaciated, had a bad skin condition, an eye infection and toenails so long she had difficulty walking. She was timid, and hung her head, just so sad and beaten down. We took her to the shelter where Kate had prepared a run that was isolated from the other dogs and we immediately gave her bath with medicated shampoo to give her some relief. Kate took her to our vet first thing Monday morning and she is going to be fine, with medication, good food and plenty of kindness mixed in. In a few weeks, she will come home with me to meet Tucker, my Rotty. I think that it will be a good mix and we already know that she loves kids and is good with cats. Her name is Angel and everyone who has met her comments on how sweet she is. She only needs good care and TLC and will get both in abundance. Our lawn sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 26th and 27th. We needed more storage space, so we purchased a large, heavy, canvas Quonset type structure and Hugh, Nancy, Kate and Carlos put it up behind the shed. We have been getting larger donations since the snow melted and needed more storage space. If you have items that you would like to donate, call Kate at 298-4733 and arrange a convenient time to drop it off. See you next week! Thank you, Donna Brouse
