Artificial Cautionary Ingredient - This ingredient appears to be problematic. What it is: Coloring & Flavoring: Used in soda pop, candy, breakfast cereals, gelatin desserts, and many other foods. What we know: Artificial food coloring is any chemical or un-natural substance that is added to food or drink to change its color. Though past research showed no correlation between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and food dyes, new studies now show synthetic preservatives and artificial coloring agents aggrivate ADD & ADHD symptoms. Several major studies show academic performance increased and disciplinary problems decreased in large non-ADD student populations when artificial ingredients, including artificial colors, were eliminated from school food programs. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a nonprofit health advocacy organization, recommends avoiding all artificially colored foods.
