Artists and Label: Rules and Business Practices The Copyright Act protects sound recordings produced on and after February 15, 1972. Sound recordings first fixed before February 15, 1972, may nonetheless enjoy protection under the common-law or anti-piracy statutes of the various states. The owners of sound-recording copyrights enjoy all the same rights as those who own musical compositions, except public-performance rights.
