As Catholic Christians, what should our attitude be towards evil in general, and the portrayal of evil during Halloween in particular? We should always try to avoid two extremes. On the one hand we should never discount the presence of the Evil One and his works in the world. The bible is clear... he prowls about the world seeking the ruin of souls. To get involved in superstition, Ouija boards, blasphemy, etc. opens hearts and souls to demonic influences that can have devastating spiritual consequences. On the other hand, we dont want to cower in fear of evil to such a degree that indicates a lack of hope or faith. We know that with faith as our shield and with Christ as our sword, we have nothing to fear from the vanquished enemy. Halloween has long been a time to express our confidence in Christ; dressing up as scary characters-- not as a way of exalting evil, but as a way of poking fun at the enemys impotency in the face of Christs victory.
