As I think of growing up in Machias, (50s and 60s) I love to recall the store-filled Main St. that once existed. In fact, I wish every generation had the opportunity to experience it as I did. Up and down both sides of the street were a variety of stores...not a metropolis by any means....just a low-key, invitational environment for those strolling down the sidewalks. Though parking meters were a bit of a drawback, they lent themselves to friendly foot officers who would take the time to say hello and even chat a while. The sights....the smells from luncheonettes and Helens Restaurant! Wow!! What could be better than grabbing a bite to eat in Helens, listen to the jukebox and view the awesomeness of the river and the falls? Life wasnt as fast-forward back then, and many a friendly conversation took place between friends as they paused from errands long enough to cement their relationships. School children loved the opportunity to hit Main St. after school to partake of the famous Lemon Blend, Frosty Rootbeer, ice-cream sundae etc. And that candy counter at the 5&10 .......nothing like it or the dear sweet Mildred who tended it. Well, friends, that was then and this is now. Wonder if you would help recreate the stores/businesses of Main St. as you remember them. Please name a place of business, where it was located, what it offered and your special memory of attachment.
