As I walk in the quiet and cool of the morning at Kidder Creek, I feel the whole place waiting expectantly for the rush of children coming to Camp HOPE in just a matter of hours. HOPE is a living thing here – waiting for children in such desperate need of its healing power in their lives. HOPE waits in the soft moisture of the grass, in the smell of the forest, in the trickle of the creek, and in the hearts of the loving staff members even as they begin to stir this morning all across the camp. The morning sun comes filtered through the trees sending rays of anticipation and life to the small, little noticed living things below the tall, powerful tree line. The children, seldom noticed until late in their painful struggles, will be here soon. The pond will ring with laughter and squeals. The ropes course will safely and securely hold even the most apprehensive child. The power and vulnerability of the horses will captivate children who have never seen a horse or felt its durable and trustworthy strength. The river will teach them perseverance and courage. The children will revel in our praise, affirmation, and celebration of who they are and who they can become. And HOPE will rise, as a living and life changing force, in the heart of every child.
