As I was walking today my thoughts meandered towards Joans stick and what a cunning, malicious little bastard it is. It is a bit like the Forrest Gump, or the Zelig, of the stick world. If you look closely at many photographs depicting significant events in history, somewhere lurking in the background will be a familiar shape - usually leaning up against a table or the back of a chair. Predictably, is does not appear in what we could consider the happier events in human history, but is prominent in portraits of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. Even further back there are rumours of Genghis Khan wielding a stick as he led the Mongol hordes across Asia, and there no doubt at all that what Cleopatra clasped to her breast was not an asp but Joans stick.
