See Isaiah 53:7-9. Note: When Jesus said to Matthew, “follow Me” He meant follow Me to the cross. Note: To follow Jesus to the cross means to live a life of self-denial. What do Galatians 2:20 and Luke 9:23 say? What was Matthew’s career title, when Jesus instructed him to follow Him? Luke 5:27 Note: Matthew was a publican, a tax collector. So what did Matthew give up in order to follow Jesus? Answer: Matthew gave up his high-paying job and his career. See Luke 5:27,28. Note: Jesus is not asking everybody to give up his/her job. But the principle is that we should be ready to surrender everything, even good things for the greater good, once Jesus asks.
