As a Florida cowboy, I always tried to keep a slicker tied to my saddle... just in case it rained. For some reason, I always seemed to replace last year’s old slicker in the summer months. I guess it was the evening thunderstorms that reminded me that my old slicker was ripped and torn, and in need of being replaced. By the time winter finally rolled around, that old yeller slicker had been hung on barbwire gates, nails in cow pens and sharp limbs so many times that it really wasn’t much use at keeping anything dry. Being as worthless as it was, it still just looked right, so I hung onto it until the next summer… As I look back, that old yeller slicker wasn’t good for anything except saddle jewelry. “Old Yeller Slicker” As I grew up in a cowboy life I had a fetish I didn’t understand An old yeller slicker tied to my saddle And to be respected as a man Respect was something that had to be earned Of this I never had doubt But a slicker was something a Florida cowboy Had long learned to do without I guess I imagined that bright yellow thing Would make me look pretty cool But in the humid Florida heat when riding in rain A slicker was like a big plastic pool But I have to admit, that when winter time came And Florida got her winter rains That old yeller slicker came in pretty handy And made me look like I had brains Photo by: Carl Blount
