As a sole proprietors of a tax paying business, my husband and I - TopicsExpress

As a sole proprietors of a tax paying business, my husband and I were promised that our health insurance wouldn’t change. We have two special needs kids, and already pay over $15,000 a year for coverage. But now we are told that our policy is being cancelled and we are loosing the coverage due to the reforms and our costs are about to go up again. We were told that it wouldn’t change, and now we face loosing coverage our kids need. As an Executive Director of a small not for profit, we were promised our work and mission were valued and appreciated. We serve special needs individuals, whose lives are being overturned by closings of services and supports. We face unprecedented regulatory changes, and budget cuts, yet those we serve still need us. We were told that our politicians care and appreciate what we do. I don’t remember the last time a politician accepted an invitation to come and see what we do, and say thank you to the sponsors, volunteers & staff who give 1,000’s of hours and $100,000+ in dollars who make up the difference when they change their minds. As a community member, I see more good than bad. People are trying to do the right thing by others. But complacency is setting in, because with all of these changes… there are fewer solutions that don’t change with the political tides, so many choose to sit back and just watch. We were told that all of these changes were going to be good for our community and economy, yet my confidence is shaken and my hope is dwindling. I learned that Economic Development Funds Announcements are being delayed due the popularity polls for this election. It seems more than most are content to sit back and watch before we are brave enough to act. There is a lot of good waiting for these announcements; there are solutions and momentum being lost due to the political tide. I will vote tomorrow, and so will my husband. For the first time our home of “Republican & Democrat” we will not look at party lines or promises. We have not bothered with the flyers and the rhetoric, town hall meetings and political rallies. We have not had any hotly contested “discussions” over the dinner table. Nothing affects our votes inasmuch as the unkept promises of those who chose to serve our public trust. We pay our taxes, we pay our dues in the community, and we pay attention, and we will VOTE.
