As an ex Immigration officer I would be dissappointed if our own expert and professional Refugees dertimination Officers did not assess the claims. I also believe that PNG would not be able to effectively resettle all the genuine refugees and Australia would need at some stage to resesettle some or many of them back in Australia. Furthermore any genuine refugees that are settled in NZ and obtain Citizenship there would be automatically able to enter Australia due our Trans Tasman agreement with that Country. Another problem would be in PNG returning the applicants assessed as not being genuine refugees but economic migrants as our Foreign Minister claimed without a valid passport to their original country of Citizenship. For those who are not aware of the actual situation it was the custom of these people to destroy their passports and other documents. This meant and may still be the case to return them back to their country of citizenship was a difficult and time consuming process. These are just some of the problems facing any Country dealing with Boat People.
