As far as I am aware the main opposition UNP and the section of the Hela Urumaya are gropping in the dark without fully assesing and analysing the political needs of the hour. People of this country are not worried about the Executive Presidency. All in all people are not at all interested about the national needs. When President Kumaratunge held a TV interview to answer the queries by the general public and others on national issues, As a member of the team worked at that time, I am aware that we hardly found any question related to national issues. Most of the questions forwared were of issues related to institutions and private in nature. We had to produce cooked up queries for the President to answer. What they want is to see how they can foster their families with the basic needs. The gravity of the problems faced by the people today are such. President Mahinda Rajapaksa is a very able politician who reads the minds of the people correctly. That is why he dole out Rs 2500.00 drought relief to people in the UVA during the recently concluded PC elections and went on to purchase the locally grown produces of the peaseants. Other main issue is the Public sector salary which has not been increased since 2006. Only thing the President has to do when the elections are announce to inform the need to the FInance Secretary. As I perceive he is a scapegoat of all recent governments led by the SLFP unlike Mr Charitha Rathwatta who had a vision for the country. The UNP and others clamouring for a COnstitutional amendment have taken the abolishing of the Executive Presidency as the main topic. But fortunately or unfortunately this is not an issue. Cost of living is the major issue. Rule of Law, status of impunity and the equal opportunity are the other issues which has an effect in mustering the minority votes. Generally in any democracy the opposition always tend to be ready for snap elections but unfortunately in Sri Lanka the ruling party.
