As its just 12 days until Arts & Crafts Trail we thought we would share one artist per day for the next 10 days. First up is Aldaron Wwodcrafts. Aldaron Woodcrafts is a small rural business run by us, Gabriel Vindt and Iona Dunbar. We live in an old forester’s cottage in Glentrool Village in the Galloway Forest with our two dogs, two cats and six hens. From our workshop at home we make chopping boards, benches, house signs, clocks, wedding favours and lots more; all from locally sourced hardwoods such as sycamore, holly, ash, cherry, yew and wych elm. We make everything by hand. Our designs are rustic, working in sympathy with the natural contours and twists of the wood. Often we decorate pieces with pyrography, burning an image by hand with a specialised tool onto the surface of the wood—like drawing with fire! Most of our inspiration comes from spending lots of time outdoors and often the wood we work with gives us ideas as soon as we hold it and start to work with it. Our designs are always changing along with the seasons and reflect what we see in the woods and hedgerows or the tree canopy and the sky. We use locally sourced hardwoods such as sycamore, holly, ash, cherry and wych elm. All our hardwood is grown and harvested locally in a small sawmill - we often learn the history of the tree it came from, which is lovely. Because we apply the design by hand, we can personalise anything we make with drawings, quotations, sketches, names….anything that takes your fancy!
