As many of you may or may not know, we do not perform ear crops or tail docks (other than what is medically required because of injury or masses) on puppies at Rosedale. We feel that these surgeries are done only for cosmetic purposes, cause the puppies pain, and provide no benefit to the animal. Now heres a study to back us up. In Great Britain tail docks and ear crops have been banned since 2007. A study compared tail injuries prior to and after the ban (many people who advocate tail docking say it prevents injuries in working dogs). The study did show a slight increase in tail injuries after docking was banned--but so slight that 232 dogs would need to be docked to prevent one injury, and 964 tail docks would need to be done to prevent one injury so bad as to require tail amputation! To us, thats too many--so we will continue to refuse to do tail docks and ear crops. Lets let the dogs look like they were born to look!
