As one of its many projects, Art for Cause is making a wonderful and inspiring short documentary, as you may know already, called My Name is Pema. a conversation between Tenzin Pema and director Irshal Ishu. It features a lovely and precocious Tibetan girl, her family and her community, at large through her interviews, who live in Ladakh, an impoverished Tibetan settlement in the remote region of northern India. The film is essentially about the trials and tribulations of living in exile and what its like to be a girl child within that community. Its been so challenging for her in fact that, along with a myriad of other issues, she actually cut her hair and dresses like a boy to try and fit into society better. Pema is also the football player of the girls Ladakh team, and the film highlights her dreams of becoming a football star, her desire to make a difference to her hometown, and overcoming the discrimination issues of playing sports as a female where there is still a great deal of stigma in both the Tibetan community and around the world. The documentary Kicking Boundaries started the exploration process of what its like for the girl-child within the Tibetan diaspora, and now My Name is Pema goes to even greater depth in its examination. When you see her struggles and her accomplishments and the articulate way in which describes them, My Name is Pema may just move you to tears.
