As the administrator of this page and as a retired firefighter from time to time I will input my own personal thoughts on a particular post I put up and this is one of them. Cancer risks and higher incidents of same have been in forefront of news, studies, etc, no secret I couldnt imagine in this day and age. The first line of defense for Firefighters whether seasoned veteran or fresh probie NO MATTER what your own individual department provides or doesnt provide is to become educated on risk factors. Take personal responsibility for you, clean your gear, dont seal it in a bag, dont keep it in dorm, dont keep it in the backseat of your car, shower after fires, dont place it in apparatus Bay next to exhaust, know that a black sooted helmet is not cool, change the stations ac filters regularly and so much more. And, If you are an Officer you lead from the front setting the example and accepting nothing less. Next step be vocal within your department to get change to happen like proper washing machines, vent systems, evac systems for diesel exhaust and dont forget annual physicals to aid in detection early. Always ready proud to serve. Pam Lillard, retired firefighter Miami-Dade Fire Rescue-FL
