As the videos started flooding my timeline, I sat back and I shook - TopicsExpress

As the videos started flooding my timeline, I sat back and I shook my head; thinking it was just another dumb social media trend with good intentions but no followthrough. I watched countless videos and found myself wondering how many of these people do this purely for attention and selfish validation, with zero intentions of actually donating to the charity. I swore I would not get involved or play into the trend just because everyone else was doing it (or at least saying they were). I figured on the chance someone actually did nominate me, I would just give a donation and then sit back until the next trend came around. Then it happened, Kurt McDonough nominated me for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and I started thinking, began researching, and quickly realized the true momentum this so called trend has really picked up. Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. - alsa.org/news/archive/als-ice-bucket-challenge.html . The more I sat and thought about it, the more I realized how amazing that figure really is. While this idea of dumping a bucket of ice water over your head and donating to charity may seem stupid, its had a tremendous amount of success in raising awareness and raising money to find a cure for ALS. Im sure when the idea for Relay for Life was brought up there were a few who voiced their opinions and doubts; stating that walking around a track in circles overnight to raise money and awareness for cancer research and patients alike, was not only dumb but irrational and doomed to be ineffective. Now, Every year, the Relay For Life movement raises more than $400 million - relayforlife.org/learn/ . So ask yourself, is it really that dumb to try to make fundraising into a social trend, something thats both interactive and fun? Thats why I not only decided to take Kurt up on his challenge, but also to make a donation, and then to turn the spotlight on a few others who have voiced their doubts or thought they could escape the challenge. Thats right, Vansen Roberts E-Rock Scotty Yeags Sarah Bana and Danielle Foye, the spotlight is now on you. The clocks ticking, and you know the drill. Take the challenge and donate, dont take the challenge and still donate; either way, time to put your money where your mouth is.
