"As third culture kids we needed our passports to popularity. Like Lindsay Lohan’s character, Cady Heron, in the box office hit movie Mean Girls, who came from years of homeschooling in a country in Africa, we were coming from a different land and different customs. Lands where Levis meant nothing and western fashion was known only minimally. And like Cady, who made a choice to join a group of fake, disingenuous teens who focused on promoting themselves at the expense of others (The Plastics) some of us made bad choices, all for that passport to popularity. Behind the seemingly shallow and empty desire for a passport to popularity is the bigger issue of identity and belonging. Wanting to fit comfortably, boasting that we live between worlds, yet knowing we stick out like red tags on black Levis." From Passport to Popularity in Communicating Across Boundaries
