As we think about St. Louis, police violence against Black bodies, and what it will take to get justice, lets remember Anna Brown, and the ways Black bodies are criminalized for doing the most basic things. Brown was a 29-year-old Black mother of two in St. Louis. She had lost her home to a tornado a few months prior when, on September 21, 2011, she visited several St. Louis-area hospitals seeking help for her aching legs. When she insisted on getting care, she was arrested for trespassing. In the process, police dumped her on the floor and dragged her legs along the ground, even after she told them she couldnt walk because her legs hurt. She died on the floor of a jail cell on September 21, 2011, from a blood clot in her legs that had migrated to her lungs. If you listen to the correction officer talking with the fire chief in the last segment of this video, you can hear him say that he thought Brown was insisting on admission to the hospital because she was deemed a drug seeker.
