As you may already be aware, Lifeline’s annual fundraising initiative, Stress Down Day is on Friday July 26. With a Lifeline centre located in Balgowlah, this awareness campaign raises money to support the brilliant work of the 450,000 volunteers across Australia who change and save the lives of people every day. Two local health practitioners, Mel Armstrong-Jones (Workplace coach and yoga teacher) and Marie Rowland (psychotherapist and wellbeing writer) are offering a seminar titled, A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO A LESS STRESSFUL LIFE at the North balgowlah Community hall on Saturday 27 July at 2pm where profits go to Lifeline. Lifeline has once again commissioned its Annual National Stress Poll (2013) and the five major sources of stress are: ♦ work(26% indicated a lot of stress); ♦ finances (, 25% a lot of stress); ♦ thoughts about the future (17% a lot of stress); ♦ health (48% a little stress, 13% a lot of stress). ♦ personal relationships (7% a lot of stress). (source: Orima research May 2013) Stress is the major trigger for long term anxiety and depression as people start to feel a loss of control. However, by employing some simple strategies both physical and psychological, people can not only reduce stress but conversely greatly improve their quality of life. Armstrong-Jones notes that the introduction of “mental health days” indicates that work-related stress and people finding it difficult to cope is becoming more prevalent. “Job insecurity and financial pressures as well as balancing a life that is over-full where we are constantly desiring a life beyond our reach causes real stress in our daily lives. If we don’t combat this from the outset, stress can give way to panic, loss of control and even total shutdown. Our workshop offers practical ways to avoid hitting the panic button.”
