At Ethans 9 month drs appt at the end of July his pediatrition said she had some concerns about his development and that she recomended Early Intervention come and evaluate him at our home. I asked her if she thought I wasnt doing something correctly or if I could have done something better. She said she didnt think so. She said she believes the fact that he is displaying a delay may have to do with what occured when he was born, even though there are no answers about what was going on with him then. If during the evaluation he displayed a significant enough delay in one of 5 areas ( cognitive, communication, physical, social, adaptive & self hep) he would qualify to receive services from either a speech therapist or physical therapist. Last Monday I met with the intake woman and we scheduled his evaluation for this morning at 10:30. His evaluation was between an hour and a half to two hours long. A speech therapist and a physical therapist evaluated him while they played with him. The main concern for him was in gross motor skills. The physical therapist decided that he does qualify for services. He has a severe delay in his gross motor skills. I dont really know how to feel.... I am sad, nobody wants to hear that their child is not develping correctly. I feel responsible, did I do something wrong? Could I have done something differently? I dont know... I just have to deal with where we are now, and discover the best way to help him. He will be receiving physical therapy once or twice a week for 6months. She said that by that time our goal should be to see him pulling himself to standing and possibly to be cruising around using the furniture to get from place to place. She said he will most likely be behind in walking. Hearing that was hard because in six months he will be sixteen months old and to have the realization that he might NOT be walking by that time is something I never imagined. Well we certainly have our work cut out for us:-/
