At a park nearby a monument is being constructed to honor those who have served our country in the military. I visited at dusk and could see the beautiful silhouette of a great obelisk in the evening light. As honorable and beautiful as this completed monument will be, I tend to think of another monument comprised of the very lives of these women and men, people who made sacrifices that others may live in peace and experience freedom. As it is said, “All gave some, and some gave all” which refers to making the supreme sacrifice of laying down their lives. Our Lord taught us, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down ones life for ones friends.” These people died for friends they knew, for those fighting alongside them, and for friends they had never met, you and I. I think of other sacrifices, too. Mothers who waited for sons and daughters that would never return, wives without spouses, children without parents who continued through their lives with the greatest void, the void of a missing loved one that would never return. Holidays with an empty chair, Father’s day, Mother’s day, and birthdays that now would be represented by a wreath of flowers on a grave. Yes, there was and continues to be sacrifices that we may have a choice, that we may be free and their lives will always be the greatest monument to me.
