At the end of speed night, while we were all retrieving our lungs - TopicsExpress

At the end of speed night, while we were all retrieving our lungs from the roadway and regretting our lunches, our trainers prepared us: hydrate well, think about nutrition over the weekend as we would be riding 100 km on our long ride day. Long ride day dawned with the promise of blue skies and mild temperatures. All the “usual suspects” gathered at SPD including our southie/northie hybrid, Beth. Dean also showed up operating on just a few hours of sleep after a night of rowdy Reynolds dry grad. There was a little trepidation at riding such a distance. We rode out from SPD along the Goose toward VicWest. We travelled along Harbour Rd. (where some of us experienced flashbacks) and travelled across the blue bridge into Victoria. We detoured around the Robert Cameron Law Group Bastion Square Grand Prix. We all wanted to go join in and put in a few km to warm up buuttttt the trainers wanted us to stay focused on the task at hand. Fine. We cut around the race and then continued our ride along the harbour. We had an amazing day to cruise along Dallas Rd. and all along the waterfront. We went through Oak Bay where Steve gazed longingly at the garage sales, through Cadboro Bay, and then out toward Blenkinsop. Katie was finally overwhelmed by the pull of the Grand Prix and left us to hightail it back to Bastion Square where they were awaiting her return with her own special bike! The rest of us carried on along Lochside. We hit the 50 km mark in Sidney - yahoo half way there! After a brief rest we continued out toward Swartz Bay and then over to North Saanich where we rode Lands End along the water. Finally back up to West Saanich Rd and over to JJ’s Coffee where we all took a much needed break. Jason crushed a chocolate croissant and contemplated a second while Dean took a full blown nap. Again on the bikes for the last 20 or so km’s back to SPD. Despite the distance, the crew kept “Treking” along like spandex clad Energizer bunnies. Back at SPD we stiffly dismounted and celebrated breaking the 100 km mark. Dean managed to pull off this longest ride yet despite his sleepless night, nicely exemplifying Rule #5 of the Velominati. You just want to be like us Dean! Today’s ride was attended by Adam, Katie (until Bastion Square called), Heather, t Ryan Tour De Rock , Lori Lumley, Jack, Tour De Rock Justin, Jason, Tour De Rock Jordan, Tour De Rock Steve, Tour De Rock Bethy, Jen, Dean (there in body anyway) and coached by Leslie, Kevin Shaw, Rod and Kevin Nunn.
