At the risk of going overboard on old Mexican restaurants, I want - TopicsExpress

At the risk of going overboard on old Mexican restaurants, I want to reminisce a tad on The Cavern, in Nogales, Sonora. I just recently Googled the restaurant and watched a 15-min. film remembrance. I guess the place went back to WWI days, had fancy heydays in the 20s and 30s as a restaurant and dance place. The film is fascinating, ending with the places denouement in 84 with a fire. Never was rebuilt, despite the familys constant predictions of next year. My family went only mid-day, so I never knew anything about the evening menu or activities. We piled out of our car in the 50s and 60s and thoroughly enjoyed their food and the experience of eating in a CAVE! We kids always stayed within our range of tacos, tostadas, etc. (The evening menus shown in the film show this fantastic list of foods not necessarily Mexican.) I learned a few cultural things on our trips there. One time, they had a kid re-filling our water glasses for us. I kept on trying to stop him, but without luck. Finally had to cover the glass with my hand. We grinned at each other. Turns out he spoke some native dialect and neither English nor Spanish. Another time, as we left our car on the street after a long time finding a parking space, some folks asked if they could watch the car. We said fine, and thanks. You know what happened upon our return----they had washed our car! Big surprise and lotsa grins! A lesson in accents! 8-)
