Athletic/Activity Code of Conduct: A review of the first year Here’s the last line of the report outlined below: “The dialogue with families focused on learning from mistakes, opportunities for personal growth, and team accountability.” That’s from the report delivered last week to the District 218 Board of Education from the athletic directors regarding the code of conduct for students who choose to participate in athletics and activities. District 218 instituted the code starting last fall. Essentially, the code identifies expectations for behavior as well as consequences for violations. Behaviors addressed in the code of conduct, which you can read at the link, include bullying, hazing, sportsmanship, insubordination, and consumption of illegal substances. Each season, athletic directors host mandatory meetings for parents whose children will participate in a sport. They outline the code of conduct, among many other topics, at these meetings. We experienced 48 violations, spread equally among the three schools, of the code of conduct. Many students completed community service, while others received suspensions from participating in their sports. “Before consequences were dispensed, all code violations were discussed amongst the administrative teams in each building,” according to the report to the Board. “A majority of these conversations focused on balancing what was appropriate discipline for the offense, while still keeping the student’s best interests in mind.” Parents, of course, remain paramount in our minds. And they supported the code’s guidelines and intent. “Parents understood the need for consequences and were happy with a second chance. Students and families were responsive, receptive, and understanding of the code’s expectations and that these incidents made for excellent conversations with families.” chsd218.richards.schoolfusion.us/modules/groups/homepagefiles/cms/805395/File/D218%20Code%20of%20Conduct.pdf
