Attended a Ullambana-Prayer at a Chinese Mahayana Temple this evening. Long chanting session with lots of prostrations to Buddhas for 3-and-a-half hours. A tall young man came stood next to me after the session started for a good 30 minutes. He did not carry any chanting book but just stood there with folded palms though not in correct posture. What amazed me was he participated in every prostration diligently. I turned to look at him - hes retarded! Many thoughts went through my mind even though in the midst of the chanting, with a heavy heart, when I looked at this young man. Obviously some things he did in his past life that resulted in his present state, but at the same time, hes fortunate to meet the Buddha-Dharma this life. At the end of the chanting session, he helped to distribute prayer items to devotees:). I wish him well! The lord asked: “Which is greater? The little sand on my fingernail, or the great Earth?” “Lord, greater by far is the great Earth. Tiny is the sand on your fingernail. The two cannot be compared.” “So too, beings who are reborn as humans are few in number. Far greater are those who are reborn in non-human realms. Therefore, you should train yourself, thinking: ‘We will live earnestly.’” - S.II,263
