August 25, 1346—After successfully crossing the Somme River at low tide the day before, King Edward III rests his troops this day in the forest near the village of Crecy. While not marching the king had his men prepare for battle. They took control of a small hill and prepared their battle positions and equipment. As in previous battles against the Scots, Edward III disposed his forces in an area of flat agricultural land, choosing high ground surrounded by natural obstacles on the flanks. The king installed himself and his staff in a windmill on a small hill that protected the rear, where he could direct the course of the battle. It was at this time that he chose to knight his eldest son and namesake, Edward, the Black Prince, who wore black armor. The French army could not cross at the same time and had further to march on this day. They marched all day and their army was strung out for miles. They would not arrive at the place of King Edward’s chosen battlefield until the 26th. The coats of arms are those of Edward III denoting his claim to be King of England and King of France. The one with the white label of three points is that of the Prince of Wales, Edward the Black Prince.
