Australia Day is this weekend, its usually the day I feel least - TopicsExpress

Australia Day is this weekend, its usually the day I feel least proud to be an Aussie. To be honest, Id rather be working on Australia day, what does that say about me? and you? How do you celebrate Australia day? Instead of recognizing and celebrating ALL Australians achievements around the world and recognizing the wrongs we have caused in the name of our country. So many people just get on piss and act like complete dickheads, all in the name of my country. F that. In all the time Ive been an Australian, which is over 20 years. Ive never felt that Australia day was a day to celebrate and be accepted - and let me tell you, Im as Australian as you can get, compared to a lot immigrants who tend to just stick with their own culture. This should say something about our culture of racism and marginalization; even to someone like myself, imagine how new Australians feel? In my opinion, so many of us exercise tolerance to other cultures and peoples, BUT never acceptance. Which is a hugely different. And until we accept and celebrate other cultures and peoples, Australia day will always be another wasted meaningless public holiday. Not to be a complete wanker, but unless you have brown, yellow, black skin, you probably would never understand how I feel. *Unless you have lived in a foreign non western country for a long time and experienced racism. And a caveat is that Ive met some wonderful and accepting Australians, but funny enough a lot of them are 2nd generation immigrants or werent born in Australia. My dear friends, xenophobia is rampant in our great country of Australia, we put on a front of tolerance, but real acceptance and celebration of all Aussie cultures is still a long reach away. This Australia day, take it easy on the piss and Aussie pride BS, and if you are NOT an Australian, be respectful to those Australians that may be celebrating a different culture to yours on this special day. And why not do some research on Australians around the world making a real difference, we might actually feel proud of our current and past achievements. Im sorry for the long speech, but its kinda hard to tell someone in conversation what Ill be doing on Australia day :) Feel free to join in the conversation and tell me what Australia day means to you.
