Awareness drive for Stem Cell Donation at Bangalore on Sun 6th Apr 2014-Proposal There are many life threatening ailments which can be treated and cured if the patient receives matching stem cells. However locating a matching stem cell donor is a exercise which is very time consuming in the absence of a Registry of willing donors mainly due to non awareness/ignorance of the subject. This results in a number of eligible persons who could be life savers not getting the opportunity to be the saviour. For a successful transplant, the patient’s genetic typing needs to closely match with that of the donor. Every patient has a 25% chance of finding a match within the family. However the rest of the patients do not find a suitable donor within the family. In such cases, there is a need to find an unrelated donor or a cord blood unit. Donor registries work towards creating a diverse database where the search of a life saving donor meets a match. A patient is more likely to find a possible match within his/her race / ethnicity, (ie) with people sharing the same cultural linguistic, biological traits etc A very simple and safe procedure similar to blood donation and more specifically to platelet donation with a little more time duration is all that is needed when a match is there in a donor who is aged between 18 and 55. It would be nice to get to know about this subject so that if we come to know of our loved ones or others needing matching stem cell donors, we understand what this is. With this in mind we plan to have a Presentaion on Awareness of Stem Cell donation by DATRI who maintain a Blood Stem Cell Donors Registry if we have a group of interested persons on Sun 6th April 2014 in the evening at Lions Bhavan, Sanjaynagar, Bangalore. This would be an opportunity to know what the process is all about and you could clarify any doubts too. Later decision to volunteer or not as a stem cell donor could be decided.
