BEHOLD SERENDIPITY...Loboc, Bohol I finally made my sentimental - TopicsExpress

BEHOLD SERENDIPITY...Loboc, Bohol I finally made my sentimental pilgrimage to Loboc church last Monday, that is almost eleven months after its destruction. Before this ,I avoided seeing this memorable structure up close because the pain I felt over its destruction has veritably left a hole in the air of my existence these past months. But it was my birthday, and I felt I needed to pay obeisance to the Patrona of Loboc who had made my previous countless visits to this place so meaningful and personally experiencing the verity of what Pope Francis said recently: that a Catholic could never be an orphan because we have the Blessed Virgin Mary as our Mother. And look what I was gifted with that day: an unparalleled view of the 7th retablo of Loboc church, one of the last two still standing in the ruined church today. I have known of this retablos existence long time ago, but it had always been locked up and unappreciated inside the hexagonal ermita ever since. Now, I not only have the memory, I also got photos to show and share to those who appreciate a healthy doze of cultural heritage here at FB. Executed in the classical high Philippine Baroque tradition, the retablo has only one niche flanked by a pair of ornately carved solomonic columns and wings and is topped by medallion that served as its pediment. It is obviously a product of the Jesuit period (1596-1768). Standing inside the hexagonal ermita that does not show any sign of damage by last years earthquake, it seems to assure viewers that the spirit of Loboc still stands despite the destruction, that some good things really are meant to last. Now I hope my friend Guy Custodio would get the chance to regild this beautiful relic and make it into something truly magnificent, just like the job he did in then side retablos of Dauis church some time ago.
