BETTY WHITE IS NOT DEAD: I removed the obvious satire article from my page about how Betty White Dyes her HAIR peacefully at home because people kept sharing it as if it were a story about her actually being dead. The first clue was the spelling...DYES vs DIES in the post I even requested that people actually read the article before posting...but still it happened. I proud to say people who posted on my page seemed to get it, so you can all pat yourselves on the back, but other people shared it and there were tons of comments on how sad it was...clearly the majority of the billions of Facebook users comment, like, and share and draw their conclusions without actually reading the article. This piece is actually not a hoax as people seem to be calling it, its a satire. A hoax is devised to lie and trick people, a hoax article would have actually said she was dead. This was a satire article which the use of dry humor, irony, exaggeration, is used to point out and draw attention to wider issues in society. This satire piece was not poking fun at Betty White, but at social media (us) and the gobbling up of everything in the feed as people spread internet gossip like wildfire. I know this message wasnt lost on most of you, but I guess in this busy world we often snatch up headlines like pieces of candy from a bowl, shoving them in without tasting or discernment. Ive done it too, although I really try not to, Ive been caught and misread something or shared something from a bad source, but I really do try. On Facebook its easy to get caught up because its information overload. We have to be careful what we believe. We have to look further than the surface. We need to stop knee-jerk reactions to everything we see and hear and jumping to conclusions without even bothering to look a little deeper. It was an experiment in human nature and social media, and while I did learn something, Im now opting out of the experiment because I dont want to even inadvertently be misleading. I hoped that my disclaimer at the beginning of the article would avoid that, but it did not. To those of you who did get it, well done! To anyone who didnt, it was not my intention to further any misinformation, only to share a story that was trying to make a point. Blessings, and be careful out there, dont believe everything.
