BEWARE: this happened to me today (Oct 9th). It seems they are targeting permanent residents. Long but worth it... I was called by the Investigation Department of the IRS. I spoke to two women and one man with Indian accents. They said that prosecution was likely and that I would need to answer a few questions that include simple things like have you ever been ticketed for speeding... They asked if I was a Permanent Resident. This seemed odd. I asked her why she didnt already know that. She quickly moved on and told me that I had been audited and they had assessed the last 5 to 10 years. She said I owed $3520 to the IRS. This total included attorney fees, documentation fees, a penalty, interest, and the principle. I asked what the principle was and she said that she was not allowed to tell me. I told her that this seemed fishy and that that would be like a cop pulling me over for speeding and refusing to tell me how fast I was going. She got mad and transferred me after blurting I dont think you understand the severity of this issue. After talking with a second women, who would not answer this same question, I ended up talking to a man in the accounting department. He said I was talking to him because I was agreeing to pay within the 60 minutes I was legally allowed before my case was forwarded to the attorney generals office. I repeated my question about the so called principle. He had the magic answer, $1700. I must confess that while I was skeptical, there was a part of me that was quite concerned. While this was going on I looked up the IRSs procedure for collecting owed money. I said, the fact that you guys were resistant to give me the details makes me skeptical. He said, I understand. So the only cause of action is to send the info to the attorney general and to your lawyer. If you dont have a lawyer we could contact a public prosecutor to help you with your case. I said prosecutor? Dont you mean defender? He said right! He repeated it. So I said, you keep saying prosecutor, you know that doesnt make sense, right? I told him that this seemed fishy because it didnt fit the procedure that I was looking at on IRS.gov. Short story long... Angie found this article and it fits this scenario. Be careful. It seemed convincing at first. Please educate yourselves. irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams
