BNYC CELEBRATES YOUTH LEADERS The Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC), on September 5, celebrated the youth that have had a positive impact and influence in the community. The inaugural awards were meant to recognize and appreciate what these young people had done.’ Speaking at the awards ceremony the acting Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, the Honourable Vincent Seretse, said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of young people to empower themselves and contribute to the development of the country. He said the theme captured Government’s objective of recognising and rewarding those individuals and organisations that made outstanding contributions to youth development. Minister Seretse further said government had identified youth development and empowerment as one of its key priorities. “We view our support for the youth in their endeavour to transform their lives and those of the communities in which they live, as a lifetime investment in the future of our country,” said Mr Seretse. He also noted that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture would this year spend over P300 million on youth development and empowerment programmes. Nonetheless, the Best Youth in Innovation, Arts, Culture and entertainment award went to Thabiso Maretlwaneng, while Mafia Soul scooped the Best Youth Owned Business award. The Best Media House addressing youth issues went to Yarona Fm, Kitso Masi took the best youth in community volunteerism award while the Best Youth in academic excellence went to Kaene Disepo. Tracy Disang emerged the Best Youth in Sport; Best Youth Activist went to Tafadzwa Lunga. Other categories included, Best youth tackling global issues, Best organisation supporting youth development, Best youth living with disability pioneering disability issues, and the Chairperson’s award. BNYC executive chairperson, Mr Louis Sibanda, said the criteria was that young people themselves selected who they thought had a positive impact in the community and also looked at what they had done to influence the community positively.
