BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION AT RAMOTSWA BORDER TO START The South - TopicsExpress

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION AT RAMOTSWA BORDER TO START The South African government has awarded a tender for construction of a bridge across the Notwane River between South Africa and Botswana at Ramotswa. The Minister of Transport and Communications, the Honourable Nonofo Molefhi, said the bridge construction was part of the bilateral cross border projects between Botswana and South Africa, adding that Botswana would construct the Plaatjan Bridge while South Africa would take care of the Notwane one. Addressing a kgotla meeting in Ramotswa on July 15, Minister Molefhi said plans were at advanced stage for the much anticipated P80 million bridge construction to commence. He said the contractor would pay a courtesy call on Balete this week while the ground breaking ceremony would be held in South Africa in three weeks time. The construction of the bridge, which would be done by a South African-based company, is expected to be completed within 14 months. The minister noted that the contractor was expected to hire some workers from Botswana, thus allaying fears that only South Africans would benefit. He said apart from creating temporary jobs, the bridge would in the long run facilitate trade between the two countries. He acknowledged that the negotiation process for the bridge construction had been slow and thanked Balete community for their patience. (BOPA)
