BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE RELATIONSHIP At every level of your leadership journey – position, permission, production, people development and personhood, your ability to deliberately focus on others through your reflections and decisions can help build quality relationships with everyone around. In order to build sustainable relationships throughout your leadership journey, you should focus on these 5 factors: 1. Self – Awareness. The foundation for human behaviour is self – awareness. It entails being meticulous and accountable to oneself. This involves having a personal understanding of the very core of your own identity and knowing yourself objectively in order to enhance your relationship with others. 2. Self – Image. You must try to build a reputable self – image firstly by relating with yourself and becoming your own best friend – so that you can give to others what you already have within you. 3. Self – Honesty. A sustainable relationship can be built through acceptance of feedback from people, showing appreciation and reflecting on their comments without prejudice 4. Self – Improvement. The strategic point in our leadership journey is our ability to constantly seek and impact knowledge. Self-improvement is a process of working on your weakness, building on your strengths and empowering the people in our lives through the act of teaching. You get better by helping others to be better. 5. Self – Responsibility. In the words of John Maxwell – “to lead others, you must lead yourself first”. Leading yourself and taking responsibility for yourself is a pre-requisite for leading others. Winning relationships begin with you. Success in your relationships is determined by your self-concept as defined by these five factors.
