Back Surgery Depends on Which Road Did You Take A recent study - TopicsExpress

Back Surgery Depends on Which Road Did You Take A recent study by Keeney, Fulton & Turner et al. (Spine: Dec.12, 2012) found that 42% of workers with back pain had back surgery who saw a surgeon first in contrast only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor first. That is a big difference. Whether a patient goes under the knife has a lot to do with whether the patient saw a chiropractor or a surgeon first. Once a surgery is performed-it can never be un-done. In other words always try chiropractic first – because if you really need surgery- your chiropractor will refer you to a reputable surgeon. In my 30 years of practice, I have had about 4 patients who have gone through surgery. In fact I had to fight (along with orthopedic surgeon) for one of my patients with insurance company to okay surgical intervention for the benefit of patients health. They (Ins. Co.) knew that chiropractic treatments are very conservative, scientifically proven, clean and way cheaper than the medical/surgical model. But there is a time and place where conservative treatment boundaries stop and the surgical model starts with hope that once back surgery does not lead to 2nd or 3rd surgery or hope that the patient does not end up with “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome” (ICD-9 Code: 722.83) Shuvir S.
