Baloyi: Stay where you are Itu Posted: 21 January 2015Time: 02:46 pm Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi tells KickOff that it would be in Itumeleng Khune’s best interests to stay at the club. Khune, with his contract expiring in just over five months’ time, has naturally been a subject of intense transfer speculation, but Baloyi says there are many good reasons why Khune must prolong his stay at Chiefs by signing a new contract. “I haven’t spoken to him and at the end of the day he is the only one who can decide what he wants to do,” ‘Spiderman’ tells this website. “If it is an overseas move, then yes. But if not I would say to him stay where you are. Firstly, he’s facing a challenge now with the two boys [Brilliant Khuzwayo and Reyaad Pieterse] pushing him. I think for too long he had no competition and yes at some point Arthur Bartman pushed him but it was always evident that he was the number one. Now the two boys are doing well and that is presenting a challenge for him and he must prove, not to anyone but himself, that he can overcome adversity and challenges,” Baloyi says. “Secondly, Itu and Shabba [Siphiwe Tshabalala] are the only two players at Chiefs who can break some of the club’s long-standing records, especially in terms of appearances. In my 13 years at Chiefs I played about 347 games which means I made the third highest appearances,” Baloyi continues. The club’s former midfielder and current assistant coach Doctor Khumalo holds the record for the most appearances for Amakhosi with 397 while Khune (with 216 appearances) and Shabba (242 appearances) still have a long way to go. “Thirdly, I don’t like to blow my own trumpet but I’m probably the most successful Chiefs goalkeeper because of all the trophies we won at the club during my time there. So Itu can go on to become the club’s most successful goalkeeper. “There are [local] clubs who can pay his salary, but realistically Chiefs can compete and having been involved with the club in the past, it opens up opportunities commercially. “In short, there is a lot for Itu to play for at Chiefs,” Baloyi concludes. The 27-year-old has been included in Chiefs’ CAF Champions League squad that was made public on Tuesday. A
