Ban on sale of loose petrol..shillong times 01/09/2013 SHILLONG: In an attempt to prevent petrol bomb attacks in Shillong, the East Khasi Hills district administration has prohibited sale of loose petrol in the whole district. There has been a trend of miscreants resorting to the use of petrol bombs during agitations sponsored by the NGOs resulting in damage to vehicles and properties particularly that of the Government. The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that the order was issued to prevent the misuse of loose petrol. Besides targeting Government properties, the miscreants in the past had also hurled petrol bombs in civilian areas. Petrol bombs, also known as Molotov cocktail or Molotov had its origin in 1930s when agitators in Finland used them against Soviet Union to protest against the move to partition Finland. Molotov cocktail, made of petrol, was named after former Soviet foreign minister, Vyacheslav Molotov. The fire bottles once lit and thrown are fatal as was in the case of destruction of many Government vehicles and buildings in Meghalaya in the past.
