Banana Pancakes One of my favorite former students came home - TopicsExpress

Banana Pancakes One of my favorite former students came home this week from her first year in college. We were chatting online, when Sierra Dillingham said something like, you know youre home when your mom makes you homemade banana pancakes at 11 pm. I said, sounds yummy. She said, she would bring me some (she lives about 1/2 mile away), and did I mind if Chris Swanson comes too (Chris is her boyfriend and also a former student, not of mine, but who I knew when he was in 3rd or 4th grade). I told her sure, maybe the white chocolate blackberry brandy truffles that Id just finished making would be set enough I could send some home with her. She replied Omg! Were on our way up! David had started giving Sierra guitar lessons a couple of years ago, so she knew where we lived. Plus, David and I became friends with her parents when she was in my class. A couple of minutes later, (almost midnight) they come knocking on my door with a plate of hot banana pancakes, smothered in syrup. We talked about how their first year in college went, professors they hated, bad roommates. We chatted about how many of their former classmates had babies, and what others in their class were doing. Sierra said she just couldn’t imagine being a parent at her age and what a struggle it must be, especially for those that did continue on to college. My little dog, Buddy, decided he should be their new best friend and kept running (or hopping I should say) between them to be petted. We talked about Sierra only being able to have a (a as in one, not even an aquarium full) fish for a pet, and how you really couldn’t do much with a fish, like take them for a walk on a leash, or pet them and about the fact that they seem to die on a regular basis. I can’t remember if I congratulated Chris on getting a fellowship for next year, but that’s quite an accomplishment to secure for an incoming sophomore. We talked for a couple of minutes about David. We giggled about how the people that burglarized my house weren’t too bright. They actually pawned one of my bracelets that they had stolen at the pawn shop about a mile from my house, and had to use picture ID to pawn it. Sierra said that she had guessed who it was as soon as she read about the burglary, and she was right. We talked and chatted for a while longer, and then it was time for them to be getting back home. They stayed until shortly before 1 am. I had a wonderful time chatting with them. It is so nice to see kids being positive and happy and doing something with their lives. It was nice to giggle, chat, go over old times, and remember things about David with them. Oh, and the banana pancakes were scrumptious.
