Harrogate threatened in the opening minutes with a Hardy cross and Franks long-throws. However, soon Barrow settled down for the first of many forays towards the Harrogate goal. In the 11th minute, a Jamie Allen power-volley crashed against the bar with MacGillivray at full stretch; he then blocked the rebound. In the 22nd minute, after a Mills corner, MacGillvray punched a Davies header past his left post. Five minutes later he also saved a long range free kick from Mills. Harrogate remained dangerous on the counter and in the 33rd minute, McMillan made a good save from Worsfold. Five minutes later, Worsfold and then Rowe shot past McMillan’s left-hand post from close range. Barrow fans feared the worst when Harrogate were awarded a 43rd minute free kick right on the edge of the box in a central position, but Barrow’s wall blocked Bolder’s shot. As the first half drew to a close, Barrow had another chance as Allen shot wide of the left post. An entertaining first 45 with chances for both sides, a theme continued in the second period as the pace intensified with the search for the first goal. Barrow had to deal with Leigh Franks’ long throws and telling crosses into the box. In the 51st minute, Franks provided both the throw and the subsequent shot which McMillan saved. Two minutes later, Richard Davies was floored just outside the ‘D’ of the penalty area, this time giving Barrow a free kick from a dangerous central position. In the 54th minute, Sam Sheridan blasted his shot past the wall just inside the left hand post for 1-0. Ten minutes later, Sheridan also provided an excellent cross, but Mills’ touch sent the ball spinning past the post. In the 66th minute, Harrogate made their final substitution and three minutes later, Bolder headed wide from another Franks long throw. A Nelthorpe corner then whizzed along Barrow’s goal line as our original 11 held firm. With 15 minutes left to play, we made all our substitutions over the next eight minutes, Paddy Lacey, Chris Sutherland and Aaron Bowen replacing goalscorer Sam Sheridan, man of the match Alex-Ray Harvey and Greg Mills. During this final period, we had three bookings to deal with as well as Harrogate’s increasingly desperate attacks. The crowd drew sighs of relief when Woods shot over the bar and then McMillan soundly saved Bolder’s final corner in the second and fifth minutes of injury time. Overall, a very well deserved victory against a decent Harrogate team, with many good attacking build ups and sound defending. Our first win of the season and, judging by this confident-boosting performance, more should quickly follow.
