Be aware: Media outlets in Arkansas are reporting that people across the country are being targeted for a scam that to the victim it may look like a missed phone call from an unrecognized number. Scammers overseas either buy or steal a list of U.S. cell phone numbers, and computers are then used to mass dial the numbers and the calls appear to come from Caribbean nations including Grenada, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or the British Virgin Islands. Your cell phone rings, typically one ring which is just long enough to generate a missed call on your phone. The catch happens when you call back. The scammers basically send you a bill just like a 900 number. Usually, they charge $20 for the call and $9 for every minute after that. The Better Business Bureau says because this scam raises no red flags, it is way more effective than others that have been tried before. Officials say there is no one trying to sell you anything. There is no one sending the wrong type of message or who has a foreign accent or doesnt speak very well. All of those things consumers typically look for are absent. If you suspect you have been the target of a scam, contact the Better Business Bureau or the Attorney Generals office.
