Below is an email I wrote today to our Mayor, Frank Pallone, and some other officials. I will obviously keep everyone updated on any replies I receive, and will continue to write them weekly if I do not get a response. Please contact me if there is any specifics you would like me to include. Mr. Mayor and Mr. Pallone, I am writing on behalf of the group Port Monmouth NJ Flood Relief and Stop FEMA Now. Our community is very concerned about the ongoing neglect of our section of Middletown. Our area continues to be flooded on a daily basis due to a non-functioning storm drain system at the end of Suffolk Avenue, and the lack of a flood wall. As far as the storm drain, the Mosquito Commission performed some work over the summer which appeared to help, but the area is now beginning to flood with every tide change and moon cycle. The storm drain is all but collapsed, and the outlet into the back bays is extremely small and failing. As far as the flood wall. I recently read on the towns website that the dune replenishment is scheduled to begin March 2014, which is a lot later than originally stated, especially since it will not help the flooding in our area at all. That can only mean the construction of our flood wall will be delayed yet again. What is more disturbing is the letter that Middletown has posted on its website regarding the new FEMA law which will sky rocket flood insurance costs and leave many of us homeless. The letter states that North Middletown did not receive ANY damage due to the flood walls and pumps that were installed, unlike its lowly neighbors in Port Monmouth which the letter all but dictates. Perhaps we could get the same fair treatment. Our groups will not stop pushing the issue that we need help in this area. The town needs to repair our drainage system, and Congressman Pallone needs to continue pushing the Army Corps to get this flood wall built. Our groups will also continue to bombard FEMA to repeal this law and keep flood insurance affordable. A response to this email would be greatly appreciated, and the members of our group, now numbered in the thousands, are anxiously awaiting a reply. Thank you, Ralph Borgess 609-865-8621
