Benicia and Letters of Love, Letter 47 We Met in a Benicia Antique Shop Mr. Garrett, Neither my husband nor I have ever resided in Benicia, but we met there. We now live in Seattle. We subscribe to the Benicia newspaper to keep in touch with the place where we met. A couple times a year, before I got married, I would come to Benicia to walk around and see the sights. It was a great escape from San Francisco, where I lived at that time. I met Alex in an antique shop. We had exchanged pleasantries in the store as I passed by the counter where he stood when I entered the building. At a glance it was easy to see he was a good looking man, but Ive seen a lot of good looking men. I wasnt looking for one. As we each wandered around the store, we happened to stop by the same area. He pointed out a very nice looking item and we started talking again. He was pleasant. It may sound corny, old fashioned, or quaint, but he offered to help me place in my car a purchase I had made. He was nice and I saw no harm in accepting his friendliness. We walked outside and I opened the car door. He leaned in and placed on the floor the small mahogany box I had purchased. After he stood up I thanked him and he said I was welcome and that he was glad to help. Then he looked around and said it was a nice warm day and asked if I would like to walk up the street and get an ice cream cone. I hadnt had an ice cream cone, especially with a man, in years. Alex was the right man, at the right place, at the right time in my life. We sat at a sidewalk table in front of the store and ate the ice cream as we watched the street traffic and the people walking by. All that time we also watched each other. After about twenty minutes I told him I had to leave. I didnt really have to leave then. Maybe I was testing him. He said he came to Benicia a couple times a year from his home in Pleasant Hill. I told him it was the same with me. When he said perhaps we might meet again sometime, I told him I would like that. Then I did something I have never done in my life, but it felt so right to do it. I said yes when he asked if he could have my telephone number. I had met him less than an hour before, and it was out of character for me then to give my number after just meeting someone. Life had hurt me a little in the past. Alex walked me to my car. I unlocked the door and he held it open as I got inside. I started the engine and lowered the drivers window and said goodbye. He aid it wasnt goodbye, because he would telephone me. He did. There was a message waiting on my answering machine when I got home. He said he knew I wouldnt be home yet, but wanted to phone to keep he memory of the time we spent together fresh. He said he would phone later at a time when I should be home. He did. We talked for over an hour as if we had known each other forever. That day in Benicia started the time from which Alex and I will know each other forever. It was a Benicia connection and it is still going strong. Two lives came together that day, and I am so grateful they did. That day gave me the love of my life. This summer well fly down for the Peddlars Faire. We would both like to have an ice cream cone again. Yours, Georgia
